Worth knowing about printed envelopes and formats
When choosing the right solution for your company's shipments, several technical aspects such as size, closing mechanism and paper type come into play. We help you make the correct choice so that the contents are well protected and the shipment meets the requirements for modern, machine-based mail handling.
Sizes of printed envelopes
In Denmark, the standards typically follow ISO 269, which is adapted to common paper sizes. The most commonly used format for business correspondence is DL (110 x 220 mm), which fits an A4 sheet folded in three parts – ideal for invoices, pay slips and standard letters.
For larger shipments, C5 (162 x 229 mm) is often used, which can accommodate an A5 sheet or an A4 sheet folded in half, making it suitable for brochures and smaller catalogs. If you need to send contracts, magazines or presentations that cannot be bent, the C4 envelope (229 x 324 mm) is designed to hold a full A4 sheet. There is also the C6 (114 x 162 mm), which is often used for smaller cards or invitations.
Closing methods for printed envelopes
The choice of closing method often depends on the package volume and storage time. The classic method is the rubberized closure, which requires moisture to activate the glue; this type is durable and suitable for machine packaging, but requires a humidifier or manual treatment for smaller runs. Another popular solution is the self-adhesive closure with latex glue, where two surfaces are pressed together. It is quick and easy, but the glue may have a limited durability over time.
Peel & Seal, or strip closure, is a widely used method today, especially for manual packaging. Here, a protective strip over the glue is removed before the flap is pressed down. This ensures a strong closure without the need for moisture, and the glue does not dry out during storage in the same way as with latex closures. For internal mailings, there are also solutions with drawstrings that can be opened and closed several times.
Paper quality for printed envelopes
The quality and surface of the paper have a great impact on both the printing result and durability in the mail. Standard envelopes are typically produced in a paper weight of around 80-100 grams, which is sufficient for regular mail. If you want a more exclusive feel, you can choose thicker paper, which gives a stiffer and more robust envelope. This signals quality and protects the contents better against bending.
The surface of the paper, often called the finish, affects how colors and text appear. Uncoated paper is the standard for office use, as it has a matte surface that is easy to write on and ensures good readability. Coated paper can be chosen if you want logos and graphics to stand out sharply with high color saturation, but it can be more difficult to write on by hand. There are also textured surfaces that can give a unique, tactile expression to special invitations.
Strengthen your company's profile with printed envelopes
An envelope is often the first physical encounter your customers or business partners have with your company when they receive mail. By using printed envelopes, you transform a standard mailing into part of your overall branding strategy. It's about creating recognition and signaling professionalism even before the recipient has opened the letter.
- You create a professional first impression that sets your mail apart from the crowd.
- You increase your company's visibility and brand recognition through consistent use of logo and colors.
- A clear sender often arouses more trust and curiosity, which can increase the opening rate.
- You get the opportunity to communicate messages or slogans directly on the outside of the shipment.
- You ensure a common thread in the company's visual identity across all platforms.
