If you work in marketing, you know this: Colors are not “just colors”. They are recognition, brand quality and what makes people not confuse you with your competitor at the trade show.
If you are a procurement professional, you also know this:Faded profile clothing means more reorders, more questions from colleagues and a dull feeling of “this wasn’t worth the money”.
The good news: The biggest culprits are pretty predictable. And the research is actually pretty clear on what helps.
Why does profiled cladding fade in the wash?
Fading is rarely one thing. It is typically a combination of:
- Heat (high temperature)
- Time (long programs)
- Friction (clothes rubbing against clothes + drum)
- Chemistry (bleaching/active ingredients + incorrect dosage)
A solid example: A study (University of Leeds in collaboration with P&G) tested “cold-short” wash (25°C for 30 min) against “hot-long” (40°C for 85 min) with regular household laundry – and found significantly less color loss, less color transfer and fewer microfibers and textile fibers in the wastewater with the cold, short cycle.
They even measured that the quick/cool wash could reduce microfiber discharge by up to 52% and cut color/dye discharge by up to 74% in their setup.
And as a bonus to both the ESG report and the electricity bill: The same research article mentions that washing at 30°C rather than 40°C can save approx. 40% energy per wash, and 20°C rather than 40°C approx. 66% per wash (referenced in the article).
The simple solution (which almost always works)
Think like this: Cold + short + less friction + milder chemicals + gentle drying.
It sounds banal. But that's exactly why it works in practice.
The 7 washing mistakes that typically cause profile clothes to fade:
error 1
“Just run 40–60°C and it will be clean”
Heat and time increase the risk of color loss and color transfer. In the study above, color loss and color transfer were significantly higher at 40°C/85 min than at 25°C/30 min.
What to do instead:
- Standard profile clothing: typically choose 20–30°C and a short/gentle program (unless the care label says otherwise).
- Hygiene requirements (e.g. certain industries): follow your internal requirements and the label – but still keep time, friction and drying as gentle as possible.
Error 2
Overcrowded machine (or “micro-loads” with too much tumble)
Overloading can cause more friction in the wrong places and poorer rinsing, and very small loads can also cause unnecessary mechanical stress.
A good rule of thumb:
fill the machine “normally” – the clothes should be able to move, but not do somersaults like at a Friday bar.
Error 3
Not turning clothes inside out
When the outside (logo/print and the nicest surface) rubs directly against other clothes and the drum, wear increases.
Cotton Incorporated describes that friction/abrasion in both the washing machine and dryer can raise surface fibers (“fuzz”), which gives a more “washed out” look – they even call it “phantom color loss”.
What you do instead:
- Turn profile clothes inside out before washing and preferably before drying.
error 4
Tumble dry on high heat (or “till crisp dry”)
The tumble dryer combines two things that colors hate: heat and mechanical impact. Cotton Incorporated points out that abrasion can occur in both washing and drying.
What to do instead:
- Prioritize air drying when possible.
- If tumble drying: low heat and shorter time (take out clothes slightly damp and hang them to dry).
error 5
“Color safe” can still be harsh (especially if there is active bleaching chemistry)
Some detergents contain “activated” bleaching systems, which can cause significant losses in color strength, depending on the sensitivity of the dyes.
What to do instead:
- For profile clothes: choose a mild detergent and avoid bleaches/additives unless necessary.
- Dose correctly (too much detergent can cause residue and extra “work” in the rinse).
error 6
Too much friction from details (zippers, Velcro, hard materials)
Zippers and Velcro are little “sandpaper machines”. Especially against prints and fine surfaces.
What you do instead:
- Close zippers, close Velcro, and preferably use a laundry bag for delicate parts.
error 7
You expect “fading” to be just about color – but it’s also about surface
It's not just the dye that disappears. When the surface becomes more “fuzzy”, the color looks more dusty, even without dramatic color loss. This effect is described as “phantom color loss”.
What to do instead:
- Gentle wash + less tumbling.
- Consider textile choice and quality (more on that when shopping).
Laundry guide for the company (easy to roll out to colleagues)
Here is a simple “company standard” that marketing and purchasing can agree on:
The shopping perspective: How to buy profile clothes that last longer
If you want to reduce complaints, repurchases and the “it looks worn out after 10 washes” talk, it’s as much about purchasing as it is about washing.
Three specific things to do when ordering:
-
3. Plan “Total Cost of Ownership” (TCO)
- A simple math for shopping:
If a polo costs X, and you typically replace it after 12 months due to fading, but can make it last 18–24 months with better choices + washing guide, then the savings are often greater than you think (and marketing wins on brand consistency). - A simple math for shopping:
If you want profile clothing that continues to look like “our brand” instead of “our brand-ish”, the recipe is simple:
- Buy right (material + decoration for the use)
- Wash cold and short
- Turn down friction and tumble dry
