Why sizes are a marketing and purchasing problem
If the profile clothes fit wrong, the brand looks wrong. In photos, at trade shows, at events and in everyday life. And if you are shopping, you also know: Wrong sizes turn into “dead stock” (and that kind of thing is surprisingly bad for creating team spirit).
In retail, returns are a huge expense: In 2023, the overall return rate was 14.5%, and online returns are even more (17.6%). And in a Coresight survey, size/fit was the most cited reason for online clothing returns (53%).
In companies, it’s not always about “returns” – but the mechanics are the same: If the size feels wrong, the clothes don’t get used.
Therefore: Here’s a simple method that reduces guesswork, wrong orders and the classic “it’s fine… for my chair”.
The 2-minute method (the one we actually mean)
You can choose your size in two ways. The fastest and safest way for profile clothing is to measure a shirt that you already know fits.
Method A
Measure a favorite jersey (recommended for teams)
- Find a t-shirt/hoodie you love the fit of.
- Lay it flat on a table.
- Measure these 3 things:
- Chest width: armpit to armpit (lying flat)
- Length: from shoulder (highest point) to bottom
- Sleeve: especially important on hoodies (from shoulder seam to sleeve end)
Compare the numbers directly with the size chart for the model you are considering (important: model, not just “brand”).
Result: You choose based on measurements, not letters. And yes – that’s the whole trick.
Method B
Measure your body (good if you don't have a reference)
- Chest measurement (circumference) + height is often enough for a first choice.
- Then choose the fit (regular vs oversize) and adjust one size up/down.
Why “M” is not a size (and why it's not your fault)
Sizes vary because:
- Fit varies (regular, slim, oversize)
- “Unisex” is not an international law, but a fit idea (can fluctuate a lot)
- A hoodie is made for layering and movement in a different way than a t-shirt
There is even a European standard (EN 13402), which is based on body measurements and a standard pictogram to make sizes more understandable for consumers.
But: The standard doesn't solve everything in practice, because you still have to match the measurement chart of the specific model. That's why the "measure a favorite shirt" method works so well.
Before choosing a size: Choose the purpose
Before you choose a size: Choose the purpose (marketing tip)
Size is not just “what fits”. It is also “what look do you want”.
Ask yourself:
- Do you want it to look sharp in photos and at trade shows? (typically more “regular” and not too long/too wide)
- Do you want it to be used as a daily “work uniform” and be comfy? (often a little more roomy)
- Do you want it to be a hoodie that people wear privately? (oversize/relaxed often wins – and it’s good for brand exposure)
Once you agree on the look, choosing a size becomes much easier.
Hoodie vs t-shirt: the most important thing to remember
-
T-shirt
- Fits closer to the body
- Chest width + length are often the most important measurements
- Small differences in length can change the entire look (crop-feel vs “too long”)
- Fits closer to the body
-
Hoodie
- Should typically be worn over something else
- Sleeve length matters more (sleeves that are too short = no one bothers with it)
- If the hoodie is very “heavy” or brushed on the inside, it often feels less roomy in practice
- Ribbed edges at the bottom/sleeves can give a tighter feel, even when the chest measurement is ok
- Should typically be worn over something else
In short: It is completely normal not to use the same size in a hoodie and t-shirt.
When someone is between two sizes: how to choose the right one
Use this mini-rule (it's easy to teach internally):
Choose the larger size if:
- The garment should be worn over a shirt/layer
- You want a more relaxed/oversize look
- The person hates tight clothes (they exist… and they say it loudly)
- You know the clothes are washed and dried “a little rough” in reality
Choose the smaller size if:
- You want a more “sharp” and tight look for events/pictures
- The person prefers fitted/regular and not oversize
- The measurement chart shows that the chest width/length is already roomy
The Purchasing Hack: How to Get Sizes Right Across Your Business
If you order for 10+ people, “guessing and hoping” is expensive. The best solution is a mini-process that takes less than an hour and saves you 30 emails.
- Create a sample pack (size run)
Order 1 piece of the most likely sizes (e.g. XS–3XL) in the model you want to use. - Hold a 15-min fitting session
Lay out the sizes (t-shirt and hoodie separately). People try on, choose, and you write it down. - Save the sizes as “company standard”
Next time you reorder, you already have the answers. - Consider two fits (if budget and setup allow)
In many teams, one unisex model will not feel good for everyone. A simple alternative (e.g. a model with a different cut or a “relaxed vs regular” choice) can significantly increase usage.
3 rules that save 90% of size chaos
- Choose the look first (regular vs oversize) – otherwise the size choice will be random
- Measure a favorite shirt and match the measurement chart for the model
- For teams: use a sample pack and save the sizes for the next order
